Active listening is a valuable skill that most counsellors are able to harness to build a positive and successful relationship with a problematic client. For instance, some clients may wish for a certain result to be achieved even if it is not possible to achieve it at that time. For this type of client, a coach who can respond appropriately to the client's request and communicate clearly with this client, could achieve an outcome the client desires. However, some clients may be highly suggestible and react strongly to instructions given by a counsellor. In these cases, the client should be responsive but also need to understand the instructions being conveyed. A client may also need to pause before giving feedback and this is where the use of cues and active listening skills will again come into play.

Good coaches will also know when to pause for instructions from a client and when to give more detailed feedback. Some people are naturally good at providing instructions but not so much at listening. These people will respond well to coaching because they are more attuned to their environment. If a client cannot relate to a session, he or she is not likely to continue engaging in the therapy. A coach who is skilled at sensitive listening can pick up on these nuances and be able to apply the instructions to the client much more easily. This makes it possible for the coach to get the desired results without having to ask the client to stop and think about what he or she is actually saying. Good coaching also allows the client to have more control over the therapy, as he or she will be able to review instructions, as required, throughout the session.

By acquiring these skills we would be better equipped to help others. We would be able to listen deeply to them and address their issues in an empathic and caring way. A lot of the problem lies in the fact that counselling and psychotherapy are usually conducted by working with unsystematic individuals. They lack a system that would see their needs and challenges in a particular context.

An essential element in becoming an effective Counsellor and Psychotherapist is the ability to become sensitive to other people's needs and feelings. Being sensitive to other people's feelings and needs is an aspect of the Empathic skill. Unfortunately, most counsellors, psychologists and therapists are overrated in this area. By learning how to acquire and develop the Empathic skill, you will see your therapeutic career take off much faster and easier. You will also see that your clients get more effective counselling because they get better assistance and guidance from you.

Because the goals of telephone counselling are often different than those of a Counsellor, it is important that the two types of counselling be kept separate and referred to as a private session. By using a specific script and visual cues for the two types of counselling, clients are more likely to receive tangible benefits from the counselling experience. In addition, both types of counselling are equally helpful for clients who are struggling with depression or anxiety.
